“Fantasy-related industries” conflate fantasy and reality.

According to sociologist Max Weber, in Western cultures, fantasy may be propelled by disenchantment with modernity, and thus a desire to escape various cultural strictures imposed by science and technology. Here, our interest is about problematic aspects of fantasy reification, and we focus upon two. One deals with the abdication of civic responsibility. The other is macroeconomic in nature. It discusses Depression-era attempts to constrain public policy, anchored in religious belief.

I’m what might be called a Tabernacle Choir Mormon. There are aspects of the Mormon culture I love dearly, and others I believe to be long overdue for revision and updating, for the best good of our society.
